Being a Student, Square One (Again)

Welcome back everybody!

Today I wanted to write a little bit about going back to school. For those who don’t know me, I received a B.A. in International Relations from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio back in 2015. After 5 years of college, I was soooo done. Didn’t want to look at another text book again! I got what I needed to commission and that was all she wrote.

Well, joke was on me, because if I want to go past Captain, I need a Master’s Degree… smh. In January of 2017, I started my M.A. In International Relations and Conflict Resolution at American Military University… while still having a full-time job, still serving in the Army Reserve, and training for the 2017 San Antonio Golden Gloves.

Let me be the first to tell you… this is not for the faint of heart. Fairly intensive reading, posting, replying to fellow student postings, research in addition to my full-time job. Getting out of work to go HAM on the heavy bags, get some sparring on, sweat my heart out, constantly checking my weight to see if there was any progress. Coming home to shower, eat, realize you’re really not about studying or getting on the laptop to do some work, but you really should if you want good grades for the nine credit hours you’re taking. Wanting to munch on cheese puffs while you work on your paper but having to eat a rice cake instead…

Granted, everyone has different views on how to go about getting their higher ed on, and different experiences, but for me it’s been a challenge and a half because I don’t like studying to begin with. My advice to you, if you’re currently in my situation is this: KEEP GOING. Does it suck? YEEEESSSS. Is it worth it? YES.

😀
